Histoplasmosis, Bat Guano, Bird droppings, Biohazard cleaning

Histoplasmosis is a respiratory disease caused by the inhalation of fungus spores excreted by bats and birds, that can persist in the environment for several years.

In the United States, Histoplasma, the fungus that causes Histoplasmosis, mainly lives in soil in the central and eastern states, particularly areas around the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys, but it can likely live in other parts of the country as well.

Outbreaks can occur during demolition/renovation activities that create dust containing bird or bat droppings.

Avoid doing activities that are known to be associated with getting histoplasmosis, including:
1) Disturbing material (for example, digging in soil or chopping wood) where there are bird or bat droppings
2) Cleaning chicken coops
3) Exploring caves
4) Cleaning, remodeling, or tearing down old buildings
Large amounts of bird or bat droppings should be cleaned up by professional companies that specialize in the removal of hazardous waste.
